The philosophy of history of the great church historians of the late Roman empire reveals the conflict between Christianity and classical culture which marked the end of the ancient Graeco-Roman world and the beginning of the Middle Ages. Fate and Fortune, oracles, demons, eschatology, Origenistic doctrines of pre-existence and transmigration, divine kingship and medieval political theory, the decline and fall of Rome - all are investigated in this historiographical study of Eusebius of Caesarea and his fifth-and sixth-century successors.
The author, Glenn F. CHESNUT, received his doctorate from Oxford University, and is now Associate Professor of History at Indiana University, South Bend (U.S.A.). His central purpose in this book is to show the character of these five formative histo¬rians and the manner in which they shaped the writing of history in the western world for a thousand years to follow.
