This book draws on recent language acquisition research to present arguments for a promising new direction in language teaching theory. The authors use research which has employed broad corpora of spoken and written discourse to demonstrate how a unit they call the "lexical phrase" can serve as a basis for both second and foreign language teaching.
Part one provides a descriptive account of the lexical phrases and its role in language, including discussion of the discourse functions of various types of lexical phrases.
Part two concerns applications for pedagogy, and the final chapter examines important areas for further research, suggesting implications of a lexical phrase approch for various problems in applied linguistics.
