The 'volcanic' art of Cai Guo-Qiang in Pompeii and Naples recaptures the link between ancient and contemporary sensibility. In collaboration with curator Jérôme Neutres, the internationally-acclaimed artist and pioneer of explosion art establishes a new dialogue between the viewer and the masterpieces of the National Archaeological Museum of Naples (among them the Venus Callipyge, the Farnese Hercules, the Atlas, frescoes, and mosaics..).
Displaying his mastery, Cai Guo-Qiang creates a new body of work through a mesmerizing explosive studio performed in the Amphitheatre of Pompeii. Evoking the 79 AD catastrophe that destroyed the city while paradoxically preserving the art in its ashes, art is born, or rather reborn, from the magmatic bowels of the Vesuvius. This very destruction is a source of creation, and history a source of unlimited inspiration.
