There is a commonplace stating that argumentative discourse is a rhetorical species, the direct requirement of this axiom is that rhetorical techniques (figures of speech, writing strategies) define an argumentative discourse.

This paper is questioning this axiom; its purpose is to show that pragmatics as a developing linguistic branch put in use new terms defining an argumentative discourse. The author's hypothesis draws on two definitions of pragmatics (i) the basic goal of pragmatic theories is to provide an account for how we go about interpreting such everyday exchanges (Ariel, 2008,p.4), (ii) pragmatics is concerned with the study of language in a context (Yule,2010,p.127). These premises coincide with Ducrot and Anscombre's argumentative assumption that argumentation as an interpretive act.
